High Fructose Corn Syrup - I'm convinced this is part of the reason for my addiction to sugar and I've tried to eliminate it from my diet. So I actually started reading ingredient lists and oh my goodness EVERYTHING has high fructose corn syrup in it. I've read all about the subsidies in the corn farming and I thought it was over exaggerating, but I think there may be something to it. I mean things you wouldn't think - like cornbread stuffing. Why does that need high fructose corn syrup??? Revolution! Fight the addiction! Use real sugar!
Cable & Phone monopolies - I had been in a fight with Comcast & Verizon trying to get service in my house. Now it turns out that my lack of service is actually my fault, but trying to get to that point was one of the worst experiences of my life. It was enough to make me scream and curse and say cable and phone be damned! If I weren't so sure that I can't get direct tv, I would cancel comcast and if I didn't need verizon so I can have a home alarm system, I would cancel Verizon. From technicians that don't show up, to technicians that bring their girlfriends on their calls (and she had the nerve to ask to use my bathroom. I felt like they were casing the joint to rob me later) to just plain ol' triflingness. I can't believe it. My mother was like relax and I was so angry b/c it's such an inefficient way to run a business. However, due to good ol' fashioned competition, things are about to change. The fact that I'm fighting with Comcast & Verizon means that yes, I have moved. I have almost all of my stuff from my prior home and have been unpacking boxes, shopping for furniture and even taking Jean-Claude & Roxie to their new home. JC is loving it. Roxie, poor thing, needs some time to readjust.
So, I was having a discussion with a friend of mine regarding reading and society. He brought up a book that said that holistic thinking can come now b/c of the modern advances rather than the linear thinking that comes from reading large amounts of text. What the book failed to realize is that a literate society is a modern concept. I would posit that change in thinking more holistically comes from a society that is able to read large amounts of texts (understanding them is another blog though). During brunch with my mother and her friends, we discussed how throughout history people have acted fools and today's tomfoolery is no different.
Anyway, I ended the last blog with friendships and I'll do the same for this one. I finally had the long overdue talk with "friend" and he asked me if we could be friends in the future. I'm still not sure. What defines friendship? At what point does someone switch from acquaintance to friend?
